Writing is hard. It seems simple with AI doing so much of it for us, but if you truly want to write with verve and vigor, you know the bots can’t help you bring out your best self. And these days, so many educators are overwhelmed trying to create AI-proof assignments that some brilliant writers are getting lost without the support they need and deserve.
My name is Dr. JPB Gerald. I always wanted to be a writer. It’s something I’ve been doing since I knew what letters were, when I made up superheroes and despite never being good at visual art, wrote extensive comic books based on the wild stories I had in my head. But “writing” is not a simple career to find after college, so I eventually became a teacher and lived up to the mantra of, “if you can’t do, teach.” I love to teach, and I still teach, but deep down I just wanted my words to be in the world.
And then…..
I’ve now had three books published by major education and/or academic publishers. My books are praised not just for their research but for their style and their prose. And, as of this writing, if I search my name online it says, “author.”
So. What about you? Do you want to be an author? Or do you just want to finish your dissertation or your college thesis? Or maybe your child is entering junior high school and hasn’t yet cracked how to write an essay? Or, on a personal note for me, maybe you or they are neurodivergent and struggle with executive function, but really really want to get those words out in a way that’s unique and valuable.

I am descended from people who were listed on the census at “illiterate laborers” in Galivants Ferry, South Carolina (hence the name). I managed to become someone whose literacy is in no doubt. I don’t think there’s anyone who wants to write who can’t.
